He shrugged. "Of all the people here, you are the only one alone despite your personality. If it weren't due to the demon being the cause, perhaps I would try for Misery, but you are miserable for no reason. I cannot even carry a disease." As he was talking, he had approached to a comfortable conversation distance. Now, he suddenly lunged and gently brushed her cheek with the back of his hand. "Give me ten minutes, I wash my hands, and you check me. I guarantee I will be clean."

Gwen watched him warily as he moved closer. Before she could move, he lunged and touched her face. Her body backed from his touch instantly. Her eyes widened. He’s just filling you with false hope Gwen. She thought to herself. Next thing you know, he’ll go for your head.
Just then William appeared in front of Gwen and looked at Joshua. His bicolored eyes had a frown etched in them. “Wash your hand and don’t touch her again.” He said.

"I already said I would," he replied. "And she still has tests to run. There is someone on this planet for everyone, and I will not allow anyone for whom I might be the one to go without." He returned to his bed and sat down on it. "Eventually, you will have to start trusting me."

William looked at Joshua and eyed Gwen to go. When she was out of the room and hopefully well down the hall did the keeper of Death turned back to their guest. “I am the leader of this group and they trust whom I say is ok. But they and I have our prejudices still. I’m sure you read about the epidemic of that virus last year in this area. If not, I’m sure Sapphire will be happy to tell it to you what happened. I have to go escort people to the afterlife.” He said disappearing.

Thirty minutes later, a syringe of blood and a prepped Petri dish with a skin culture showed up on Gwen's desk. Both would turn out to be completely microbe free, not just of any deadly strain she might carry, but of anything. Even the dust mites in the culture were clean.
Although he did not know it, his immunity to damage did come from a demon, which passed to him when his mother was killed - healing and immunity.

Sapphire got a note from William and went to knock on the door. “Jos?” She asked. “Are you away? Iam did not ask me to listen to you.”
Gwen got the cultures and checked everything. He was clean, like he said. She closed her eyes and bit her lip in thought. It still didn’t mean that his affection wasn’t based on being Bait.

"Nobody here but us chickens." He commented. "Come in."

Sapphire walked in and gave him a small smile. “So you didn’t touch my friend.” She said patiently. “Not a bold move.” Of course she hid any small hurt at the thought of him liking her friend. She knew Gwen needed someone who was immune to her. But still it hurt. “Not many Bait tried to do what you didn’t.”

It took him a moment to untangle that last one, and he smirked. "And every one of them died." He surmised, "I expect Gwen is testing my blood and tissue samples now."

Sapphire breathed in stopping herself from nodding. “That will be wrong.” She said. “Most likely not. And it will dismiss you from her love of you being Bait.” Sapphire licked her lips in thought. “Especially not since the last one hadn’t tried to dismember her before his birth.” The memory was still fresh in her mind as well.

He tilted his head. "But it's a step. Wait... Dismembered?"

Sapphire looked at him. “No.” She then stopped. “Oh that’s wrong. The Hunters didn’t tell you how adorable we are.” She said. “And of course they would tell you about how they don’t like to experiment and love us when they set us free.”

"Ouch," he said, more at her wording than what she meant. "They didn't tell me anything. I suspect they planned it to be a suicide mission. Not that you could kill me, but they probably planned to finish me off. They were following me, but I lost them in Sweden." He was not at all certain of the hunters' intentions, but that they lost his trail he knew. He was still hiding something.

Sapphire looked at him and Lies gave a small purr. She knew he was hiding something. Lies loved it when people lied and hated it when they tell the truth. Her eyes narrowed. “Take all the time you need to tell us what you’re not hiding. You will be allowed to see Gwen again on your own.” Which meant that until he fesses up fully, they won’t trust him completely.

He raised an eyebrow. "All I can say is I believe he is a friend of yours, the one that distracted my pursuers." This time it was the whole truth. He really could not reveal the identity of his assistance. The house phone rang. It was Triad. Although he was not a friend, per se, he was one of the Hunters' oldest enemies, and most famous.
