The necklace pulsed with a gentle heat in his hand as he was close to her. However, it was apparently she wasn't on the island. Really Christine was in her own private undersea cavern below the island. The dark mermaid worked hard to keep herself from the surface world. Upon her return, she gave up her voice and now was broken hearted hearing Nick was dead. The sea-witch who held her voice had a proposal for the mermaid. Live forever with the pain of loosing the one she loved, or joining him in the afterlife by giving up her life. Her hand played with the Conch that the witch gave her that would take her life. 'Why did I give you up?' she asked. 'I should have stayed'

He pulled off the necklace, gazing at it for a moment, then sprinted into the forest. Arriving at the waterfall pool, he threw it in, watching as the currant carried it down into the underground river.
"Find it. Find me." One thing he'd brought with him was a satellite laptop, and he knew the news had already been published. He waited a moment, then began to sing.
"Sing once again with me, our strange duet. My power over you grows stronger yet. And though you turn from me to glance behind, The Phantom of the Opera is there, inside your mind!"
His powerful tenor echoed off the mountainside, and, deep in the river, from the necklace as well.

Christine was preparing to place the shell to her heart when she heard the strangest sound. She couldn't believe it because he was dead. She began bring the shell close to her when she saw something sparkle. Carefully she sat the shell down and went to the necklace. Her hands closed around it her eyes in disbelief. How? You're dead... she thought.

He stood, gazing into the pool for a moment, then it hit him. Turning, he sprinted back to the lagoon, dove in, and emitted a series of rapid clicks that roughly translated as, "I'm here, where are you?" Hopefully, the dolphin was in the area.

The dolphin popped up and nuzzled against him. 'She is below. I can take you to her. If you have a light and a way to breath.' It said moving away a bit. 'She was torn up since she left you.'

He grinned. "Right. Forgot you can talk." He pulled his rebreather and a headlamp out of his pack, slipped them on, and dove back into the water. He knew the way to the river, and swam into it.

The dolphin showed him the passage way he wasn't familiar to. It lead to Christine's favorite place. Carefully the animal went to Christine who still was holding the necklace. The mermaid looked up at the bright light and moved away from it afraid. Her heart pounded as she saw the familiar form.

He clicked a button on the lamp a couple times, dimming it, then set it down on the shore, pulling off his rebreather. "No more talk of darkness Forget these wide-eyed fears I'm here nothing can harm you My words will warm and calm you." As he sang, he slowly moved toward her.

Christine moved close to him as he sang. Her arms resisted wrapping around him, still afraid he was a dream. How was he alive? She did know he expected her to sing back but she couldn't. She gave up her voice out of sadness. The dolphin spoke to him for her. 'She wants to know if it really is you. She can't speak.[/I['

He laughed softly. "What can I say that a dream would not? I'm real. I think, thus I am... I think." As he spoke, he reached out and gently pinched her. "Not dreaming. The obituary was so the world of men wouldn't look for me."

She wrapped her arms around him closing her eyes. Her body then cramped as she felt her promise to the sea witch attack her.

He felt the muscles tightening and held her gently. "What happened," he asked the dolphin.

'Seawitch. She gave up her voice so she would be further ostracized from her shoal. Mostly because she knew she didn't belong both places.' the dolphin said. 'Then there was the deal she made to give up her life to be with you....'
Christine rested her head on his shoulder shaking. She loved him but she was afraid he would be angry with her.

"You're very well educated for a dolphin," he commented wryly. One hand came to Christine's hair, stroking it gently. He looked at the conch. "Is that the... thing?"
